JZX100 Which Year to Buy: Price, Condition, and Revision
The JZX100 platform — sold as the Toyota Chaser, Mark II, and Cresta — ran from September 1996. Manufacturing ceased June 2001; sales continued through October 2001. All three body styles share the same chassis and mechanicals; the differences are styling and market positioning. The Chaser was the sportiest, the Mark II the most balanced, and the Cresta the most luxury-oriented. For import purposes, the three are interchangeable at the drivetrain level.
The question “which year to buy” means something different here than it does for most JDM platforms: because production ran only five years and ended in 2001, every production year is now US-eligible as of 2026. The constraint that governs S15 and DC5 buying decisions — which production years clear the 25-year rule — does not apply to the JZX100. All of them clear. The decision is therefore pure condition-and-price, with variant (Tourer V versus naturally aspirated) doing most of the work.

1. Import eligibility
Read this before looking at prices. If your country’s rules exclude a production year, that car’s price is irrelevant to you.
US — 25-year rule
The JZX100 began production in September 1996. By 2026, the entire production run clears the 25-year threshold. There is no eligible/ineligible split.

Eligibility runs on individual build date (the month stamped on the compliance plate), not registration year. A car registered in January 1997 but built in October 1996 is eligible based on October 1996. Verify the build date before purchasing. This is a material contrast with platforms like the S15 Silvia (1999–2002 production) and DC5 Integra (2001–2006), where US buyers in 2026 are constrained to only the earliest production years. JZX100 buyers face no such constraint.
The practical consequence: you are not forced toward the oldest, cheapest, highest-mileage end of the market by eligibility rules. A 2001 late-production Tourer V is as importable as a 1996 early car. This means condition and variant are the controlling variables — not the calendar.
Canada — 15-year rule
All JZX100 production is eligible (all pre-2012). No constraint.
Other markets
Australia’s SEVS scheme, the UK’s individual vehicle approval (IVA) route, New Zealand’s entry rules, and similar import frameworks in southeast Asia do not create year-specific eligibility windows for the JZX100 in the same way. We searched Japanese retail listing sites — primarily Goo-net, CarSensor, and Goo-net Exchange — and compiled individual price observations for JZX100-platform vehicles (all three body styles). Collection date: 2026-08-20.
N = 26 individual price observations from actual listings, supplemented by Goo-net catalog market summary data for Tourer V grade-level pricing. The Goo-net domestic platform showed 136 Chaser + 256 Mark II + 73 Cresta listings at time of access; the Goo-net Exchange export platform showed 140 additional Chaser export listings. Combined market depth across domestic and export platforms exceeds 500 units, confirming a liquid JZX platform market.

These are retail asking prices in the Japanese domestic market, not auction hammer prices. Your exporter buys at the wholesale/auction level, which sits below retail. Use these figures for relative comparison — Tourer V premium over NA, price spread by production year, effect of mileage — not as your landed cost estimate. The Tourer V premium
The premium over NA variants is substantial and real. A clean-condition Tourer V 5MT with documented history trades at roughly 2–3x a comparable-mileage NA Avante or Grande. The JDMBUYSELL market analysis (updated April 2026) summarises the US-market spread as $12,000–$55,000+ across the full JZX100 range, with factory 5MT Tourer V examples clearing $40,000+ and base AT NA variants entering around $10,000–$15,000.
The premium is driven by three factors: the 1JZ-GTE engine’s reputation, the factory R154 5-speed manual’s scarcity (most Tourer Vs left the factory as 4-speed automatics), and the drift/motorsport community’s sustained demand for turbo examples. A car listed as Tourer V but fitted with an aftermarket manual swap has the same performance but carries some of the same structural questions as any modified example — the premium for a factory 5MT is specifically the factory R154 with its original structural documentation.
Early vs. late production pricing
The JZX100 received a minor facelift in August 1998 (model code changed from E-JZX100 to GF-JZX100). This is commonly called “前期” (pre-facelift, 1996–1998) and “後期” (post-facelift, 1998–2001). The facelift brought revised front/rear lights, interior updates, and specification changes including the 5-speed AT replacing the 4-speed AT on the Tourer S.
Price observations do not show a clean pre/post-facelift premium — condition and mileage dominate. A low-mileage 後期 (post-facelift) Tourer V commands more than a high-mileage 前期 (pre-facelift) example, but that is mileage, not facelift premium. Dealers do market 後期 examples with explicit “後期” designation, and specialist dealers price accordingly.
The year-to-year price pattern is primarily a mileage pattern, not a revision premium. Earlier cars have accumulated more miles; the miles are the price driver.
3. Condition by production year
All years share the same electrical age problem
The JZX100 owner-reported issues survey (N=147 posts, 2026-07-31) is clear: the dominant fault cluster on this chassis is electrical and electronic, not mechanical. In 45 engine-bay posts, there was no bottom-end failure, no head gasket failure, no turbo failure. The 1JZ-GTE engine earns its reputation.
What the mechanical reputation hides is a 25-year-old electronics suite. The JZX100 generation introduced electronic throttle control (ETCS) and traction control (TRC) — systems that were novel at launch and are now 25 years old. Documented fault categories from the Minkara survey:
- Throttle ECU / TRC / ETCS warning lights — expensive group; ECUs repaired rather than replaced because replacements are hard to source
- Speedometer repair — two independent posts in the survey
- Airbag computer replacement
- Capacitor refresh across all computers — one owner systematically replaced electrolytic capacitors in every ECU. This is electronics restoration, not car maintenance.
- Momentary total power cut while driving — documented as a separate post
Critically: this electrical age problem does not differ by production year. A 1996 car and a 2001 car both have 25-year-old ECUs. The 2001 car’s ECUs are five years younger, but that difference is small relative to the total age. Capacitor degradation is a function of years, not miles — a low-mileage 2001 example with original unserviced electronics has the same capacitor age as a high-mileage 2001 example.

- Every warning light illuminates at ignition and then extinguishes cleanly — TRC, ETCS, ABS, SRS. A dark cluster is not “no faults”; it may be a bulb removed to hide a fault.
- Speedometer reads and is steady, no dropout
- Every window from every switch
- Cold-start VVT cam sprocket rattle — a rattle from the front of the engine on cold start is documented in two posts and is 1JZ VVT-i specific
- Oil leak history, timing belt and water pump as a bundle
Tourer V vs. NA condition considerations
The 1JZ-GTE turbo engine in the Tourer V is reliable — the survey confirms this — but it is also the engine most likely to have been driven hard and modified. The owner-reported issues analysis found the Minkara sample is a heavily modified population: AT-to-MT conversions, Power FC engine management, front-mount intercoolers, welded fender arches for wider fitment, and systematic aftermarket modification.
Drift history is not a disqualifier, but it requires inspection. The structural question raised by the survey: if the car was structurally modified (different engine type, transmission type, suspension type), a 構造変更 (structural change registration) was required in Japan. This marks the vehicle certificate with 改. A visibly modified car without 改 on the certificate raises the question of whether the work was registered. For NA variants, modification is less common but not absent. These cars were bought as daily sedans by Japanese buyers and driven accordingly. The electrical fault cluster still applies — the ETCS/TRC suite is present across all JZX100 variants.
High mileage on the 1JZ platform
High mileage is common. The survey population included multiple cars over 19万km. The 1JZ-GTE is a long-stroke inline-six that owners consistently report as durable at high mileage when oil maintenance has been consistent. What changes with mileage is peripheral: timing belt (due at ~100,000 km — budget belt, water pump, and front seals together if history is unknown), VVT cam sprocket wear, and rubber component age. The core bottom end at 20万km with documented oil changes is reported as generally sound.
The specific risk of 1996 early production
1996 pre-facelift Chaser/Mark II examples are the oldest and most likely to have:
- The highest accumulated mileage
- More complete modification history (more time for owners to have modified and returned to stock)
- Capacitors of maximum age across all ECUs
- Timing belt overdue if not documented
These are not disqualifiers — a documented, inspected 1996 car is a legitimate purchase. But the inspection burden is highest at the early end.
4. Buyer profiles
US buyer (2026)

What to prioritise:
- Variant first: Tourer V or NA? The price gap is large and permanent. A Tourer V at the lower end of its range (high mileage, modified) costs more than a clean NA variant. Decide which side of that gap you’re on before comparing individual listings.
- For Tourer V: factory 5MT versus AT-conversion is the premium marker. Factory R154 with original documentation is the most valuable form. An aftermarket manual swap delivers the same shift but at a lower price — and with the modification questions described in §3.
- For budget US import: a 2000–2001 Tourer V 4-speed automatic in clean condition represents the best value point — late production, shorter mileage accumulation window, no premium for factory manual, and the same 1JZ-GTE engine.
- Electrical pre-check is non-negotiable on any year. Request instrument cluster photo at ignition-on (warning lights cycling) before committing to purchase.

Canadian buyer (2026)
The 15-year rule imposes no JZX100 constraint. Canadian buyers access the full range on the same terms as US buyers — which means condition and variant drive everything.
The practical Canadian advantage is that the JZX100 is available in larger numbers from local importers who brought cars in earlier under the 15-year rule. Locally imported, already-sorted examples with Canadian compliance documentation may offer better pre-purchase inspection access than a direct Japan purchase.
Other markets (UK, Australia, New Zealand, southeast Asia)
In markets where the JZX100 is already domestic or widely imported, revision-year selection is a preference question. Japanese market consensus for any JZX100 purchase: inspect the electronics first (the mechanical reputation creates false confidence), establish timing belt history, and verify the modification documentation on any car that has clearly been worked on.
5. The price-condition interaction
The price ranges above describe what types of prices appear at retail. The practical use is identifying anomalies.
A Tourer V 5MT at ¥1,500,000 is anomalously cheap for its variant. The anomaly is explained by something: major repair history, severe modification with shoddy reversal, structural damage, or electronic faults that are expensive to trace. A 2001 Tourer V at ¥700万 is anomalously expensive — explained by extreme low mileage, comprehensive ECU restoration, new-manufacture mechanical parts, or a seller pricing to peak US export demand.
The most useful action before committing to a budget: search Goo-net or Goo-net Exchange filtered to Chaser/Mark II JZX100, then scan the distribution within your target variant (Tourer V 5MT, Tourer V AT, NA sedans). Read the cheap end carefully — what specifically explains each cheap listing? A cheap Tourer V with known electrical fault costs less than the repair. A cheap NA variant with low mileage and no modification history may simply be priced by a seller who doesn’t track export demand.

6. Limitations
This section is required. Read it before using the price data above.
N=26 individual observations is insufficient for statistically reliable per-year averages. The ranges in §2 describe the shape of the market, not a measured mean. Any specific car can fall well outside the stated ranges based on mileage, condition grade, modification history, and seller strategy.
These are retail asking prices, not auction hammer prices. Your exporter or agent buys at the wholesale/auction level. Japanese sources consistently describe the retail-to-auction gap as hundreds of thousands of yen on sports cars — do not use these figures as your cost estimate. Use them to understand relative pricing structure only.
No stratification by auction condition grade. A car with structural repair history (R grade on Japanese auction sheets) sells 25–40% below an equivalent clean-grade car. Our sample mixes grades — the CarSensor listings include cars with noted repair histories at different price points.
No type-specific fault rate data. The owner-reported issues survey (N=147) covers the full X100 range (including GX100 2.0L cars alongside JZX100 Tourer Vs) and is not stratified by production year or variant. The condition notes in §3 are inferred from known characteristics and age, not from measured year-specific failure rates.
The electrical fault cluster is a signal, not a statistic. The survey found roughly thirteen electrical/electronic fault posts in 147 sampled posts. This counts posting events in a heavily modified, self-selected population of active Minkara users — it is not a defect rate per car. Treat the cluster existence as the finding; do not extrapolate a percentage.
Prices move. Collected 2026-08-20. The JZX100 market has been subject to upward pressure from US 25-year eligibility expansion (2001 production became eligible in 2026) and sustained export demand. Both factors may continue to move prices.
