JB23 Which Year to Buy: Price, Condition, and Revision Type

The JB23 ran for twenty years across ten revision types. Every year of that run is still available in the Japanese used market, and the price gap between the earliest and latest is roughly ¥1,000,000 — about USD 6,700 at current rates. The question “which year to buy” is therefore three separate questions: which type does your import rule allow, which type does your budget reach, and which type’s condition risk can you manage?

1. The constraint that decides first: import eligibility

Read this before looking at prices. If you cannot import a given type, its price is irrelevant.

The consequence for US buyers in 2026: you are choosing among 1型, 2型, and 3型 — the oldest, highest-mileage, and cheapest JB23s in the market. The types Japanese buyers consider the sweet spot (7型 onward) are not available to you until 2033. Any buyer’s guide that recommends “7型” to a US buyer is recommending a car that cannot legally enter the country this decade.

For Canadian buyers: you can access everything up to 8型 now, including the 7型 that Japanese buyers most recommend. The 15-year rule makes the Canadian market materially different from the US market — not just earlier, but qualitatively better in terms of which types are reachable.


2. Price data by revision type

How this data was collected

We searched Japanese retail listing sites — primarily CarSensor and Goo-net — and compiled individual price observations for JB23W vehicles. Collection date: 2026-08-12.

N = 24 individual price observations from CarSensor listings, with broader market context from Goo-net’s stated inventory of 5,539 active listings and published market summaries from multiple Japanese sources. We also noted 25 active US-market listings on JDMBUYSELL.

These are retail asking prices, not auction hammer prices. As our price research guide explains, retail prices sit above the wholesale/auction level that your exporter pays — the auction hammer price is your cost floor, and retail is above that. What these figures tell you is the relative price structure across types, not your landed cost.

This data is directional, not definitive. 24 sampled observations is not enough to establish type-specific averages with statistical confidence. The ranges below reflect what types of prices appear in the market for cars in each type’s year range; individual cars within a type vary widely based on mileage, condition, grade, and modification history.

The US export market adds a floor on early types

In the US market, 25 active JB23 listings on JDMBUYSELL (retrieved via web search 2026-08-12) range from approximately $8,960 to $16,900 USD — with the cheapest being a 2000-model 3型 equivalent. Early-type 1型–3型 cars that attract US import demand are reportedly holding their prices in the Japanese domestic market, with some Japanese sources noting that US demand has begun to establish a floor on 1型–3型 prices that would otherwise have declined further with age. This is a reported trend, not a verified price series. If you are buying a 1型–3型 for US import, be aware that you may be competing with domestic Japanese buyers who are reselling to US exporters.


3. Condition considerations by revision type

The universal rule: condition outranks type

Japanese specialists are consistent on this point. As our JB23 revision types guide notes: “A rotten frame cannot be economically fixed. Type selection is a refinement; frame condition is the decision.”

What changes by revision type for condition risk

The sample in the owner-reported issues survey (N=141) is not stratified by revision type. All ten JB23 types share the same Minkara filter (mg=3.5432), so we cannot derive type-specific fault rates from existing data. What follows is inferred from known mechanical changes across types, not from stratified fault data.

1型–3型 (1998–2002) — the US-eligible group:

These cars are now 24–28 years old. At that age, every rubber component — suspension bushes, intercooler hoses, vacuum lines, door seals — has had its full service life. The death wobble analysis notes that these types have slightly different kingpin geometry than later types; for suspension wear purposes they behave similarly. The K6A in 1型–2型 used a distributor ignition rather than coil-on-plug — ignition coil failures documented in the K6A article apply most directly to 3型 and later.

Practically: expect to budget for suspension wear complex (kingpin bearings, lateral rod, tie rod ends), rubber hose replacement, and ISCV service on any 1型–3型 purchase. These are known, manageable costs if priced in before purchase. An auction sheet rating of 4 or better with no front suspension notation is the minimum threshold.

4型 (2002–2004) — eligible in January 2027 for US:

The separated grille and enlarged intercooler differentiate it from earlier types. Parts compatibility changes at this boundary — aftermarket and replacement parts are type-specific. Japanese market commentary describes 4型 as having “stable used-market popularity” precisely because it is the last of the analogue cars with improved looks. Available to Canadian buyers now. 5型–6型 (2004–2008) — the lever-to-button split:

5型 is where the 4WD system changes from mechanical lever to push buttons. Engine, gearing, dashboard and injectors all changed significantly. Cars from this era are 18–22 years old — younger than the US-eligible group, but old enough that suspension wear, K6A ignition coils, and rubber components are normal maintenance items. Available to Canadian buyers; US buyers wait until 2029–2030.

7型–8型 (2008–2012) — the recommended sweet spot:

Japanese buying advice converges on 7型 onward as the safest used purchase. Engine management settled, suspension matured, and the ECU became remappable. The K6A engine reliability article notes no type-specific split in the fault data — ISCV and coil issues appear throughout the production run. Available to Canadian buyers now; US buyers wait until 2033–2035.

One specific condition note for 8型: 8型 introduced a twin catalyst and on-board diagnostics. Aftermarket bonnets and air intakes for 8型 and earlier do not fit 9型 onward — confirm type before ordering any body panel.

9型–10型 (2012–2018) — latest, most expensive, and subject to a recall:

9型 and later are covered by a Japanese factory recall for corrosion-driven coil spring fracture (cars built April 2013 to February 2018). Check recall completion status. 9型 raised the bonnet for pedestrian protection — aftermarket bonnet availability is different from earlier types. These are the youngest JB23s available, but their prices can approach or exceed the JB64’s used market entry level in Japan.


4. Buyer profiles

US buyer (2026)

Your choices are 1型, 2型, and 3型. This is decided for you by the 25-year rule — not by preference.

Budget: expect ¥300,000–¥700,000 in the Japanese domestic market for a working-condition example, before export fees, ocean freight, port fees, and destination taxes. The USS monthly auction index shows the Japanese auction market average at ¥1,315,000 across all vehicle types as of June 2026, with conversion rate at 65.5% — these are market-wide averages and tell you about direction and momentum, not JB23 pricing. What to prioritise: Frame condition above everything. A 1型–3型 with documented frame integrity and fresh kingpin/lateral rod work is a better buy than a cleaner-looking car with unknown suspension history. The front suspension wear complex is manageable and parts are available; frame corrosion is not economically fixable. Budget ¥100,000–¥200,000 for known maintenance items at purchase.

The distributor ignition system on 1型–2型 is a different diagnostic from later coil-on-plug types — parts and knowledge are less widely available. 3型 is coil-on-plug and sits in the same mechanical family as later types for ignition purposes, which is one reason to favour it at the early end if condition is equal.

Canadian buyer (2026)

You can access 1型 through 8型, including the 7型 Japanese buyers most recommend. This is one of the clearest cases where the 15-year rule materially improves your options.

For Canadian buyers, the condition vs. price trade-off is a real choice: a 7型 at ¥700,000–¥1,000,000 in the Japanese domestic market offers settled mechanics and a tunable ECU; a 3型 at ¥300,000–¥500,000 offers a lower price floor for a project car or custom base. The 7型 is the better car; the 3型 costs less and may suit a buyer planning to rebuild anyway.

Other markets (UK, Australia, etc.)

Import rules vary by country. In markets where the JB23 is already domestic (e.g., parts of Asia), revision type selection is constrained only by budget and preference, not by eligibility windows. For these buyers, the Japanese consensus applies directly: 7型 onward is the safest single choice; 5型 onward gives switch 4WD and modern interior at lower prices than later types.


5. The price–condition interaction

The price ranges above are retail asking prices and describe the population of available cars. The practical use of price-by-type data is not to find the “right” price for a given type — it is to identify when a price is anomalous.

A 7型 at ¥400,000 is anomalously cheap for its era. The anomaly is explained by something: high mileage, modified and returned to stock poorly, structural damage, or regional provenance (snow region). A 3型 at ¥700,000 is anomalously expensive — explained by very low mileage, professional restoration, or a seller pricing to US export demand. Neither the cheap 7型 nor the expensive 3型 is automatically a bad buy; they need explanation.

The most useful action: before you set a budget, search CarSensor or Goo-net filtered by the type-appropriate year range and by condition (look at mileage bands). Read the distribution — what does the cheap end look like versus the expensive end? Then compare against the expected fault costs for that era. 6. Limitations

This section is required. Read it before using the price data above.

N=24 is too small for type-specific averages. The price observations above describe the shape of the market, not statistically reliable per-type means. Any given car within a type band can fall outside the stated range — a very low-mileage 1型 can exceed ¥700,000; a high-mileage damaged 10型 can fall below ¥500,000.

These are retail asking prices, not auction hammer prices. Your exporter buys at the auction/wholesale level. Retail prices are consistently above auction prices — Japanese sources describe the gap as hundreds of thousands of yen on ordinary cars. Do not use these figures as your cost estimate; use them for relative comparison only.

No stratification by auction condition grade. An R-grade car (structural repair history) sells 25–40% below an equivalent clean-grade car. Our sample does not systematically record condition grade, so the ranges above mix grades.

No type-specific fault rate data. The owner-reported issues survey (N=141) and K6A engine analysis (N=90) are not stratified by revision type. The condition notes in §3 are inferred from known mechanical changes, not from measured type-specific failure rates.

US export demand on early types is a reported trend, not a verified price series. We noted this claim in multiple Japanese sources but did not track historical 1型–3型 prices to confirm it.

Prices move. Collected 2026-08-12. The JB23 market has been subject to upward pressure from JB64 scarcity and US 25-year eligibility unlock — both factors may have continued to move prices since this article was written. Use this data as context, then check current listings.

What this analysis can prove: That the JB23 retail market shows a clear price gradient from early to late types, that the gap is large enough to matter to budget planning, and that US buyers are constrained to the cheapest and oldest segment of that market.

What this analysis cannot prove: Type-specific fault rates, whether early types have higher defect rates per car than late types, or what any individual car will cost to maintain. The condition notes in §3 are inferences from known mechanical changes, not statistical findings.
