Japanese market practice separates the same car into three distinct price levels. Mixing them up is the most common and most expensive mistake a buyer can make.

Japanese sources are consistent: the gap between auction (wholesale) and retail runs to hundreds of thousands of yen on ordinary cars.

Where you sit as an overseas buyer: your exporter buys at the auction level. So the hammer price is your cost floor — everything between the hammer price and your invoice is the exporter’s cost structure and margin.

And the hammer price is not your landed cost. On top of it sit auction fees, inland transport to port, the exporter’s margin, any pre-export inspection, ocean freight, insurance, and your destination country’s duties and taxes. A ¥300,000 hammer price is not a ¥300,000 car. Three free tools give you access to past hammer prices, each with a different coverage angle

Agent companies publish auction price search as lead generation. That makes it free — and it makes it partial. Knowing which tool to use for what saves you from misreading gaps in coverage as gaps in the market.

カーオークション.JP is the most substantial free resource. It covers roughly 11,870,000 vehicle records (as of collection date, July 2026), searchable and sortable by model name, grade, hammer price, evaluation point, mileage, and year. Hammer price is sortable ascending or descending — which is exactly what you need for distribution analysis.

オートオークション.jp (オーオク.jp) offers price search built on trade auction hammer data. Useful as a cross-check.

The three ways this data will mislead you if you use it uncritically

Three structural problems affect every free Japanese auction price source: coverage gaps, market confusion with consumer platforms, and averages that ignore condition grade — any one of them can produce a number that looks plausible and is completely wrong.

Trap 1 — Coverage is whatever the agent chose to publish

None of these sites guarantee completeness or freshness. Japanese comparison sources state plainly that figures are drawn from past hammer records and are reference values only. A thin result set for a rare chassis is not evidence of a thin market — it is evidence of thin publication.

Cross-check across at least two sites before trusting a number.

Trap 2 — Yahoo Auctions is a different market entirely

Yahoo Auctions closed-listing data is public and tempting. It is consumer-to-consumer, not trade. For the JB23 Jimny, closed listings span ¥5,250 to ¥1,924,000 with an average of ¥283,801 — a range so wide it tells you almost nothing, because it mixes running cars, projects, non-runners, and parts donors sold privately.

Aggregator figures are worse if misread: one aggregator shows “Jimny JB23” with 2,788 items sold in 30 days at an average of ¥12,144 — because the population is overwhelmingly parts, not cars.

Trap 3 — A price without an evaluation point is meaningless

The same chassis, year, and mileage trades in a wide band depending on condition grade and repair history. An R-grade car — one with structural repair history — trades materially below an equivalent clean-grade car. English trade estimates put the discount around 25–40%, and Japanese venue commentary agrees on the direction.

The one calculation worth doing yourself: measuring the R-grade discount for your chassis

The 25–40% figure above is a generic English-market estimate. It is not a measurement — and for your chassis, year band, and mileage range, the actual discount may be narrower or wider.

  1. Go to カーオークション.JP and search for your chassis.
  2. Filter by a specific year band (e.g., 2003–2005) and a mileage band — pick a narrow slice so you are comparing like with like.
  3. Note the median hammer price for clean-grade cars (evaluation point 4 or above, no R in the grade).
  4. Apply the same year and mileage filter, but include only R-grade cars (evaluation point showing R).
  5. Calculate the percentage difference: (clean median − R-grade median) ÷ clean median.

That number is your chassis-specific R-grade discount. It is directly usable: if you are offered an R-grade car, you now know what the Japanese market discounts it by, rather than what a blog estimated.

This is the highest-value use of the free tools. The 20 minutes is a one-time investment per chassis.


Before you set a budget, look at the distribution — not the average

Sort by hammer price ascending and read the distribution, not the mean. What does the cheap end look like — high mileage, low evaluation point, R-grade? What does the top end buy you in condition terms?

You are trying to learn what your money buys in condition terms, which is a more useful question than “what is the average price.”

Then compare the auction distribution against Japanese retail listings (Carsensor, Goo-net) for the same specification. The gap is the space your exporter operates in. A quote that lands in that gap is ordinary; one that exceeds it warrants questions.


Yahoo Auctions is the right tool for pricing parts — not cars

Consumer-to-consumer is the wrong lens for trade price research, but it is the right lens for parts. This is where the data becomes genuinely useful.

Real 180-day figures for the JB23: a bonnet averages ¥7,076 across 431 sales; genuine seats average ¥14,825 across 103 sales.

If you are importing a 20-plus-year-old car, you will buy parts. The failure clusters we documented for the JB23 and other chassis are predictable. Pricing the parts you already know you will need — on Yahoo Auctions closed listings, filtered by the exact part name — turns a vague worry about maintenance costs into a line item before you commit.

Parts are also far cheaper to source in Japan before the car crosses an ocean.


The hammer price is not your cost: the layers that sit on top of it

A common source of budget shock is treating the auction hammer price as if it were the full cost. It is the floor, not the total.
