Every GC8 Impreza WRX ever built is now eligible for US import under the 25-year rule. The youngest production cars rolled off the line in August 2000 — they cleared the 25-year threshold in 2025. This means the year-of-manufacture question has a different shape for the GC8 than it does for an S15 or a JB23: there is no eligibility constraint to navigate first. The question is entirely about revision type, variant, price, and condition.

The consequence: unlike the S15 or JB23, there is no cohort of GC8s being held back by US eligibility rules in 2026. Every car in the Japanese domestic market is available to a US importer. The selection question is therefore purely: which revision type, which variant, and which condition?

Australian, UK, New Zealand, and Southeast Asian buyers cleared GC8s years ago. For all international buyers in 2026, the decision framework is identical.


GC8 revision types differ in engine tune, brakes, and driver aids — Version V and Version VI are the mechanical peak

The GC8 ran from November 1992 to August 2000 through a sequence of revisions that Subaru numbered as 型 (type) for base WRX and Version I through Version VI for the STI variants. The changes were meaningful, not cosmetic.

The EJ207 transition (5型 / Version V, 1998) is the most significant mechanical divide in the GC8 production run. The twin-scroll EJ207 produces meaningfully better mid-range torque than the single-scroll EJ20K, and its thermal management is improved. Earlier WRX variants (EJ20G) produce 240 ps at the crank; the STI V and VI with EJ207 produce 280 ps with a different character across the rev range.

The DCCD standardization across all STI variants (Version III, 1996) is the second meaningful divide for STI buyers. DCCD first appeared on the Type RA in 1994; from Version III onwards it became standard on all WRX STI variants. Driver Controlled Centre Differential allows real-time adjustment of front-to-rear torque bias. Cars without DCCD have a viscous-coupled centre differential with no driver adjustment. For buyers who intend to use the AWD system actively, this is not a marginal difference.

Base WRX revision types (1型–6型) track the STI developments at lower equipment levels. The base WRX uses the EJ20G or EJ20K engine depending on year, without the STI’s engine-specific tuning. The suspension and body are shared with the STI; the drivetrain and braking are not.

The GC8 was sold in Japan as three distinct models, and the price differences in the current used market reflect permanent structural differences in the cars.

The Type RA is not a cheap STI. It is a stripped car — some examples left the factory without air conditioning and with a lighter single-mass flywheel. For a buyer who wants the STI’s drivetrain in a quieter, better-equipped road car, the standard STI is the right choice. For a buyer specifically seeking the lightest GC8 with the Group A-spec running gear, the Type RA is correctly priced at a premium over the standard STI.

The 22B is a separate category entirely. 400 units were produced for the 1998 model year as a 40th anniversary special. The wide body, the bored engine, and the documentation requirements make it a collector market vehicle, not a daily-driver import proposition. We searched CarSensor and Goo-net for GC8-generation Impreza WRX listings. Collection date: 2026-08-31.

CarSensor (keyword search: インプレッサ WRX GC8 / GC8 WRX): 6 individual GC8 listings confirmed at time of access. CarSensor’s standard category navigation for Impreza returned 404 errors on multiple URL patterns; GC8-specific listings were found via keyword search.

Goo-net (brand-SUBARU / car-IMPREZA_WRX): 42 listings at time of access. The primary Goo-net Impreza WRX URL defaults to GDA/GDB generation (2000–2007). GC8 chassis code filter was identified on the parent Impreza page but required navigation unavailable via direct URL. The 42-listing page included a mix of GDA/GDB and a small number of GC8 examples; price range shown as ¥69.9万–¥498万, average ¥225.9万 across all generations.

The repair history discount

One of the six CarSensor observations is a 修復歴あり (documented repair/accident history) listing. In the Japanese used car grading system, a repaired structural damage history (R grade on an auction sheet) typically depresses price 25–40% relative to a clean-condition equivalent. A GC8 priced anomalously below the variant range — say, a Version V STI at ¥180万 — is almost always explained by repair history, high mileage, or condition issues that the seller knows about.

An anomalously cheap GC8 is a data point, not a bargain. Read the auction sheet comment field (評価点コメント) before bidding on anything priced well below the variant range.

Differential seals on the GC8 harden with age; the failure is slow and the car continues to drive while the differential oil level drops to dangerous levels.

Condition outranks revision type — a documented Version III beats an undocumented Version VI

The revision type progression described above is real and the EJ207 in Version V/VI is a better engine than the EJ20G in early cars. But this only matters if the car in front of you has known, documented condition. A Version VI with unknown oil change history and no drivetrain service records is a riskier purchase than a Version III with multiple logged oil changes, a fresh clutch, and a documented ignition switch replacement.

The Japanese GC8 owner community that generates Minkara logs is a self-selected group of serious owners. The multi-part engine overhaul logs, the three-stage post-rebuild break-in sequences, the meticulous drivetrain fluid records — these are the cars you want to find. A GC8 with a rebuilt EJ207 and logged break-in is a known quantity. A GC8 with no records is not.

Reading a price anomaly:

A Version V STI at ¥180万 is anomalously cheap for an EJ207 car. The anomaly is explained by something: documented repair history, very high mileage (over 20万km), a non-original engine, structural corrosion, or a combination. None of these makes it automatically a bad purchase — but they all require investigation before bidding.

A 1995 base WRX at ¥400万 is anomalously expensive for an EJ20G car. This is explained by very low mileage, comprehensive documented maintenance, a specialist restoration, or specific provenance (competition history, limited specification). This also exists and is not necessarily wrong.

The consistent priority regardless of variant or market: condition documentation is the first filter, revision type is the second. A GC8 with strong maintenance records in a lower revision type is a better starting point than an undocumented higher revision type — because the Japanese owner community that keeps records keeps the car alive, and the one that doesn’t is the one you find with surprises.

The Goo-net 42-listing count includes GDA/GDB-generation cars. The Goo-net Impreza WRX URL defaults to the second-generation WRX (2000–2007), which uses GDA/GDB chassis codes, not GC8. GC8-specific filtering on Goo-net requires chassis code navigation unavailable via direct URL at collection time. The 42 listings and the ¥225.9万 average are a mixed-generation figure.

Type RA and 22B price ranges are estimated, not observed. The CarSensor sample contained zero Type RA observations and one 22B observation. The Type RA price range above is estimated from general market context. Treat it as directional.

No auction condition grade stratification. The CarSensor sample mixes condition grades — one listing is explicitly 修復歴あり (documented repair history). The ranges above do not separate R-grade (repair history) from clean-condition examples. An R-grade GC8 trades 25–40% below a clean equivalent.

The common problems data (N=160) is not stratified by revision type. The fault clusters in the GC8 common problems analysis cover the GC8 production run as a whole. It is harder to live with daily than a standard STI and commands a price premium for the weight reduction and Group A homologation connection.
