How to Narrow a JDM Car's Build Date Using Japan's Recall Registry

Japanese vehicle paperwork does not record a date of manufacture, and Japanese chassis numbers do not encode one. We covered why that matters for the 25-year rule here.

This is the practical follow-through: Japan publishes, for every recall ever filed, the affected chassis number range paired with the production period those chassis numbers correspond to. That pairing is a public, free, ministry-published lookup table from chassis serial to build date — and almost nobody outside Japan uses it that way.

It gives you an estimated window, not a certified date. Used properly, that window can be tight. Used carelessly it will mislead you, so read §5 before you rely on it.


1. The thing that makes this work

Every recall filing published by Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (国土交通省 / MLIT) includes a table with a column headed:

Each row pairs them directly:

And the production period is manufacturing dates. Both MLIT and the manufacturers state this explicitly — 対象車の製作期間は、ご購入の時期とは異なります, “the production period of affected vehicles differs from the time of purchase.” It is not registration, not sale, not model year.

So: find a recall whose chassis range contains your car’s serial, and you have bounded its build date.

A useful detail: a single filing often splits into multiple rows for the same model code, divided by production plant and lot. More rows means finer granularity, so don’t stop at the first row that matches.


2. Where to look

Search by model name (車名), model code (型式), or filing date (届出日).

You cannot search by chassis number here. That’s the first thing that trips people up. MLIT’s system is organised by model, not by vehicle.

3. The manufacturer route — for a specific car

Since MLIT won’t take a chassis number, the manufacturers will. MLIT maintains an index of their lookup pages at renrakuda.mlit.go.jp/renrakuda/recallinfo-004.html.

Note the coverage cut-offs. Toyota’s system reaches back to 1999 and Nissan’s only to 2001 — so for a car built in the 1990s, the manufacturer search may return nothing even where recalls existed. MLIT’s published filings go back further.

A timely warning: the recall lookup mobile apps (iOS and Android) were discontinued at the end of July 2026. From August 2026 these are browser-only. If a guide tells you to use the app, it’s out of date.


4. The technique that actually narrows it: intersection

This is the part worth understanding, and the reason the method beats a single lookup.

One recall gives you a wide window. A filing spanning June 2018 to January 2021 tells you your car was built somewhere in a two-and-a-half year span. Not very useful.

But a car is usually subject to more than one recall over its life — and the windows intersect.

Add a third and it can tighten further. Long-production, high-volume models accumulate recalls, which is exactly why this method works best on ordinary popular cars and worst on low-volume specials with clean recall histories.

The procedure:

  1. Search MLIT for every recall filed against your model code — not just the famous one
  2. For each, note the chassis ranges and their paired production periods
  3. Determine which ranges contain your chassis serial
  4. Take the intersection of those production periods
  5. Verify membership using the manufacturer’s chassis-number lookup, which is authoritative on in/out

And note what step 5 gives you beyond confirmation: a recall your car is excluded from, despite the serial falling inside the published range, is informative in the other direction — see §5.


5. Where this goes wrong — read before relying on it

In-range does not mean affected. MLIT states this plainly: a chassis number inside the published range can still be excluded by specification (automatic versus manual, turbo versus naturally aspirated), by production plant, or by grade. The published range is a bracket that contains non-affected vehicles.

This is not a minor caveat for our purpose. If your car was built at a different plant than the one a recall covers, that recall’s production period may simply not describe your car. Intersecting periods from recalls your car isn’t actually subject to will produce a confident, wrong answer. This is why step 5 — manufacturer confirmation — is not optional.

It is an estimate, not a certificate. Interpolating a build month from a serial’s position within a range assumes production ran evenly across the period. It didn’t. Present the result as an estimated window, and label it that way if you pass it to anyone.

Imported vehicles use serial numbers, not Japanese-format chassis numbers, and the formats differ. Compare against the plate on the vehicle rather than the certificate.

Coverage gaps. Manufacturer lookups start in 1999–2001 depending on brand.

For US import purposes specifically: we have found no published CBP position on whether an MLIT-derived estimated production window is acceptable evidence of manufacture date. Our 25-year rule article covers what CBP does state it accepts — and note the shortcut there: if first registration was 25+ years ago, you don’t need any of this. Use this method when the registration date doesn’t get you there and the earlier window is worth real money.


6. A worked example, and a bonus finding

Take the Suzuki Jimny JB23W. Searching MLIT for the model code returns several filings, including:

1 October 2020 — front coil spring 76,362 vehicles across the Jimny and the Mazda AZ-Offroad OEM twin, manufactured April 2013 – February 2018. Cause: insufficient paint adhesion to the coil spring steel, so trapped sand and stones strip the coating, corrosion advances early, and in the worst case the spring fractures. 408 incidents reported.

6 November 2020 — front differential Incorrectly assembled front differentials with the wrong reduction ratio, causing front/rear rotation mismatch in four-wheel drive and potential drivetrain damage.

As a dating tool, the first filing brackets affected cars to a 2013–2018 production window — which for a 20-year production run is a meaningful narrowing, and the detail page carries the chassis ranges that subdivide it further.

As information about the car, it’s arguably more valuable. That coil spring recall is an official manufacturer acknowledgement that corrosion is a safety-critical failure mode on this chassis — a factory recall, 76,000 vehicles, 408 reported fractures, caused by coating failure leading to corrosion. Our JB23 rust map is built from owner repair logs; this is the same conclusion arriving from the manufacturer’s own filing.

So run the recall search on any car you’re considering even if you don’t need the build date. You get the defect history of the chassis, filed by the manufacturer, for free — and you can check whether the work was ever done.
