Suzuki Jimny JB23 Rust Map — Where They Actually Rot, and How to Check When You Can't Touch the Car

Every English JB23 guide says “check for rust.” None of them tell you where, how, or what to do when the car is 9,000 km away and you have four photos and an auction sheet.

This is built from Japanese owners’ own frame-corrosion repair logs and used-buying guides — people who got under the car with a hammer. Then it translates their method into something you can actually use from abroad.

The core problem, stated up front: Japanese buyers inspect a JB23 by crawling underneath and tapping the frame with a hammer. Repeatedly, in these logs, a frame that looks clean goes straight through when tapped. Visual inspection of a JB23 frame is not inspection. You cannot do the hammer test remotely, and no amount of photographs substitutes for it. What follows is how to close as much of that gap as possible.

1. The map — eight places, in the order owners check them

On the body mounts

The body sits on the ladder frame at a set of mount points. When those corrode, the body cannot be properly secured to the frame, and in Japan the car fails 車検 (statutory inspection).

A repair shop’s assessment is blunt: body mount corrosion is a JB23 design weakness, and as the years pass almost every vehicle ends up like this. One owner’s log shows the mounts one-side-at-a-time: the second-from-front (behind the accelerator pedal) and the rearmost were the worst, and cleaning the rust back revealed metal “riddled with worm-holes.”

A discrepancy we won’t paper over: the owner inspection list says six mount points. A JB23 5-type work log describes eight, of which two couldn’t be accessed because the side sill guard had seized, so six were replaced. The current JB64/74 generation uses eight. Treat “six” as the commonly-cited number and inspect every mount you can reach.


2. The auction sheet actually records rust — and almost no importer reads it that way

This is the single most useful thing in this article. Japanese auction inspection sheets carry a damage map, and two of its symbols are specifically rust and corrosion:

The trailing digit is severity: S1 → S2 → S3, increasing. Japanese trade guidance is that anything with a 2 or higher needs investigating before you bid.

S and C are not the same thing. S is surface rust. C means the metal is going. On a 20-plus-year-old ladder-frame car, a C anywhere near the frame, floor or mounts should stop the bid until you have photographs of it.

Beyond the diagram, the sheet has free-text remarks (特記事項) and a general condition column. Japanese buyers are specifically told to look there for 「下回りサビ」(underbody rust) and 「サビ多」(heavy rust) — phrases the numeric grade will not show you.

And here is the trap: the overall grade (4, 4.5, 5) is a cosmetic and condition score. Underbody rust does not reliably pull it down. A grade 4 car can have a rotten frame. If you are filtering listings by grade alone, you are not filtering for the thing most likely to write off a JB23.

Since English-language sources routinely list the damage-map symbols without flagging S and C as the ones that matter on this chassis, this is a cheap edge: read the map for S and C first, grade second.


3. The tool-free check — and what to demand photos of

Lift the luggage-area carpet through the rear gate. No tools, thirty seconds, and Japanese buying guides call it the check you must never skip. Owners report cases where the steel underneath has rotted away entirely and you can see the ground through it.

Any agent, inspector, or exporter can do this for you on request. If they won’t, that tells you something.

Your photo request list, in priority order

  1. Luggage floor with the carpet lifted — the highest information-per-effort shot on the car
  2. Each body mount point, close, from underneath
  3. Main frame rails photographed from the side, both sides, full length — asymmetry matters (see below)
  4. Cross members, from directly underneath
  5. Under the headlights, and the cowl area under the wipers
  6. Rear bumper corners, bumper in place and if possible removed
  7. Suspension arm mounting roots, showing the weld seams

Ask for daylight, undersides, and no wet floor — a freshly washed underbody hides a great deal.

Ask one specific question

“Has the frame been repaired or patched before?”

Here’s why. In one inspection log, the left frame rail passed the hammer test with only surface rust. The right side was covered with thin sheet-metal patches; when they came off, the frame underneath had largely corroded away. The owner’s conclusion was that a previous bad repair had caused it, and he chose full frame replacement over patching.

Asymmetry between left and right frame rails is a red flag in itself. If one side has been worked on, ask what it was hiding.


4. The patched-car warning — read this before you bid

The trunk/rear floor area is the most commonly-known JB23 rust spot. The owner list makes a point of it that matters more to you than to a domestic buyer:

So the easiest area to inspect is also the area most likely to have been cosmetically covered before sale. A clean-looking rear floor needs probing, not glancing at. Repair logs show what gets found under such patches — aluminium sheet and FRP hiding metal that had continued to rot underneath.

An inference, flagged as an inference: in Japan, mount corrosion means a failed 車検, and repair means welding. When that bill lands, some owners sell instead of fixing. Export is one of the places those cars go. We have not measured this and cannot prove it, but it is a coherent reason to be more careful about frame rust on an export-market JB23 than the general condition of the model would suggest — not less.


4b. The manufacturer has acknowledged corrosion on this chassis

Everything above comes from owners. This comes from Suzuki.

Recall filed 1 October 2020 — 76,362 vehicles across the Jimny and its Mazda AZ-Offroad OEM twin, manufactured April 2013 – February 2018. The cause: insufficient paint adhesion to the front coil spring steel, so trapped sand and stones strip the coating, corrosion advances early, and in the worst case the spring fractures. 408 incidents were reported before the filing.

This is a factory recall for a corrosion-driven structural failure on a JB23. It doesn’t cover the frame or the body mounts, and it only covers late cars — but it establishes that corrosion on this chassis is a safety matter with an official paper trail, not just an owner-forum preoccupation.

5. Region beats mileage

If you take one filter from this article, take this one.

Japanese owners treat where the car lived as the dominant variable — above mileage, above age. The rule of thumb, from an owner who has inspected many:

A snow-region JB23 at 100,000 km will reliably have something rotted through. A western-Japan car can be clean underneath at 200,000 km.

A concrete counter-example from the same community: a 1-type from Shizuoka, 20 years old and 160,000 km, with frame and floor essentially rust-free.

Two mechanisms, both named repeatedly in the logs:

Japanese trade guidance says the same thing from the auction side: vehicles from de-icing-salt regions show underbody rust, so check the inspector’s remarks column on those cars specifically.

What to do with this: the registration region is on the vehicle’s paperwork. Ask your agent for it before you bid. A high-mileage car from a mild prefecture is very often a better buy than a low-mileage car from a snow prefecture — and the second one will usually be listed at a higher price, because mileage is what the listing shows and geography isn’t.


6. If you buy one: what treatment actually costs

Japanese market prices, useful both for budgeting work before shipping and for judging what a seller’s claimed “rust prevention” was actually worth.

The critical caveat: applying coating over existing red rust traps moisture and drives the corrosion deeper. Prep is not optional on a used car — and every JB23 you are looking at is a used car.

Why internal treatment matters here: these frames corrode from the inside out. That is the whole reason a clean-looking rail holes through under a hammer. Underbody coating that only treats the outside is addressing the symptom. This is the argument for the Noxudol-class option on a car you intend to keep.

Also note: treatment is best applied before the car has been driven. On an import, the sensible window is immediately on arrival, before the first winter.
