Suzuki Jimny JB23 — All Ten Revision Types Compared, and Which One You Can Actually Import
The JB23 ran for nearly twenty years — October 1998 to February 2018 — through ten revision types that Japanese owners call 1型 through 10型. They look almost identical. They are not.
The 4WD selector changed from a lever to a button. The gear ratios changed. The turbo changed. The bonnet and grille went from one piece to two. And parts from one type do not necessarily fit another.
English-language JB23 guides treat the car as a single model. There is no English table of the ten types. Here is one, built from Japanese chassis-number registries and change logs.
And there is a twist most buyers haven’t worked out: because eligibility runs on build date, each revision type unlocks in a different year. A US buyer in 2026 can import a 1型, 2型 or 3型 — and nothing newer. The 7型 that Japanese owners consider the sweet spot becomes available in 2033.

1. The master table
Chassis number ranges are cross-checked across two independent Japanese registries and agree exactly. Dates are as published; two are disputed and flagged.

* Disputed dates. For 3型, sources give April 2000, August 2000, and June 2001 (the last may be a later within-type change, when XA was renamed XG and XL was dropped). For 5型, one otherwise-reliable registry prints January 2002 — the same date as 4型, which is clearly a transcription error; multiple independent sources give October 2004, which we use.
2. Where the real dividing lines are
Ten types, but only three boundaries matter.
4型 → 5型 — the biggest single step
Japanese sources treat this as the split between 前期 (early) and 後期 (late). Changes at 5型:
- 4WD selection changes from a mechanical lever to push buttons (2H / 4H / 4L)
- Dashboard and speedometer completely renewed — the interior stops looking like the 1990s
- Engine improved, output characteristics changed, injectors, cam profile and turbine changed
- Exhaust catalyst section changed — 平成17年 emissions compliance
- AT shift becomes gate type
- Gear ratios changed: 4L goes from 2.145 to 2.643 — meaningfully lower crawl gearing
- Rear propshaft shortened 6mm
- Seat shape and fabric changed, steering reshaped, new XC alloys
If you want the analogue car, buy 4型 or earlier. If you want the usable one, buy 5型 or later. There is no middle.
6型 → 7型 — where it becomes tunable
7型 overhauled the engine ancillaries. Ignition timing became self-adjusting, and the ECU became sophisticated enough that remapping the factory unit is possible — Japanese tuners report figures approaching 100 ps against the 64 ps kei-regulation output. Injector, throttle, plug and cylinder head revisions improved torque, with headline output unchanged because the 64 ps ceiling was a manufacturers’ agreement, not an engineering limit.
Japanese buying advice converges here: 7型 onward is the safest used purchase — suspension matured, engine management settled, and the torque curve tolerates larger tyres without going soggy.
8型 → 9型 — the bonnet line
9型 raised and reshaped the bonnet for pedestrian-protection standards and reshaped the air intake. Cosmetic-looking, expensive in practice — see below.
3. Parts compatibility — the section that costs money
This is why the type matters more than it looks, and it matters more to you than to a Japanese owner because your parts are crossing an ocean.

Before you buy any part for a JB23, establish the type. Ordering by “JB23” alone is how you end up with a front pipe that doesn’t bolt up, from a seller on the other side of the world.
4. What you can actually import — and this is the part nobody has written

Canada’s 15-year rule reaches vehicles built 2011 and earlier as of 2026. Verify against the individual car’s build date, not the type’s start date — a car built in the final months of one type still dates from that month.
Two consequences worth sitting with:
For US buyers: the JB23s available to you today are the early ones. Integrated grille, lever-operated 4WD, pre-2005 engine, the higher 4L ratio. The switch-type 4WD and modernised interior arrive in 2029. The 7型 that Japanese buyers recommend arrives in 2033. Any English guide describing “the JB23” using late-type features is describing a car you cannot buy.
4型 unlocks in January 2027 — the last of the analogue cars, with the separated grille and enlarged intercooler, and a type Japanese sources describe as holding stable used-market popularity precisely because it combines tidier looks with the mechanical 4WD feel. It belongs on the 2027 calendar alongside the R34 and the RX-7.
For Canadian buyers: you can already have anything up to 8型 — including the tunable 7型. This is one of the clearest cases where the 15-year rule buys you a materially better car, not just an earlier one.
5. Identify the type — from the number, not the bodywork
The chassis number is on the bulkhead at the back of the engine bay, and on the caution plate at the base of the driver’s-side centre pillar. It reads JB23W- followed by six digits. Match those digits against the table in §1.
Do not identify the type from appearance. Japanese sources warn explicitly that many used JB23s have had exterior parts swapped to later-type specification — a common, cheap modification. A car wearing a 9型 bonnet is not a 9型.
This is the same principle as the DC5 Type S cars converted to look like Type R: on Japanese used cars, the number is the truth and the bodywork is an opinion.
And a bonus that solves a different problem
Our 25-year rule article establishes that Japanese chassis numbers do not encode a build date, and that no Japanese document records one.
For the JB23 specifically, the community-compiled type ranges are a partial workaround. A chassis number of JB23W-6xxxxx places the car in 7型, therefore built no earlier than June 2008. That’s a one-sided bracket from the number alone — enough to rule cars in or out of an eligibility window without any further research.
It is a bracket, not a date, and the ranges are enthusiast-compiled rather than published by Suzuki. For a defensible date, use the MLIT recall cross-reference or the registration date.
6. Which one to buy
Japanese buying guidance, and our reading of it:

But the constraint that actually decides it is §4. Most readers of this article are choosing among the types their country’s rules permit, and for US buyers in 2026 that is 1型 to 3型 whatever the merits of 7型.
And one thing outranks the type entirely. Japanese specialists are consistent: engines, turbos and gearboxes can be replaced with rebuilt units and brought back to near-new. A rotten frame cannot be economically fixed. Type selection is a refinement; frame condition is the decision. Method and limits
Sources. Japanese chassis-number registries and type tables, Japanese change-log compilations, Japanese used-buying guides and specialist retailer material. Collected 2026-07-31.
Limits:
- The chassis ranges are enthusiast and specialist compilations, not a Suzuki publication. Two independent sources agree exactly, which is why we publish them — but they are not a manufacturer document.
- Two dates are disputed and flagged in §1. We chose October 2004 for 5型 over a conflicting January 2002 because the latter duplicates 4型 and contradicts several sources. 3型 is genuinely unresolved between April 2000, August 2000 and June 2001.
- One source dates 7型’s engine improvements to “6型.” Both chassis registries place June 2008 at 7型, so we attribute them to 7型. Flagged because the discrepancy exists.
- We did not verify 型式記号 (TA-JB23W, ABA-JB23W and similar) against chassis ranges; the sources we found conflict, so we have omitted them rather than publish something wrong.
- Type start dates are not individual build dates. A car near a type boundary needs its own date established.
- Parts compatibility notes are from Japanese specialist retailers, not tested by us. Confirm with the parts supplier before ordering.
- Import eligibility dates are derived from published type start dates and the 25- and 15-year rules. Verify against the individual vehicle and confirm current rules with your authority.
