Suzuki Jimny JB23 — What Japanese Owners Actually Report
141 maintenance logs posted by Japanese JB23W owners, classified and counted.
Every English-language JB23 buyer’s guide tells you the same four things: death wobble, rust, crank angle sensors, oil leaks. Those guides are written from the outside. This one is built from what Japanese owners actually posted when they worked on their own cars.
The results agree with the English guides on one major point, contradict them on another, and surface two failure clusters that no English guide we found mentions at all.
Read the Method and limits section before acting on any of this. The sample is a snapshot, not a census, and the biases are specific and knowable.
Method in one paragraph
We sampled the JB23W-filtered maintenance-log (整備手帳) listings on Minkara, Japan’s largest owner-maintenance community, across five categories — suspension/running gear, exterior, engine bay, electrical, and inspection — taking the most recent entries in each. N = 141 posts, collected 2026-07-31. Each post title was classified as routine/consumable, modification, fault-or-wear-driven repair, or procedural. Titles only; we did not read post bodies. Full limitations at the end.
Of the 141 posts, roughly 49 (35%) were fault- or wear-driven repairs. The rest were oil changes, tyre swaps, and modifications. That ratio is itself worth knowing: most of what JB23 owners do to their cars is not fixing them.

The vocabulary problem, and why it matters to you
English guides describe “death wobble” as a single named syndrome and prescribe a single fix: replace the rod bushes, kingpin bearings and tie rod ends together.
Japanese owners never use a syndrome name. They post individual part replacements:

Eight posts, all the same front-end wear complex, zero occurrences of a single unifying term.
The practical consequence: if you search Japanese owner communities for “death wobble” or any translation of it, you will find nothing, and conclude the problem doesn’t exist in Japan. It does. It’s the single most-worked-on area on the car. You have to search by part name. The Japanese terms above are the search strings — use them directly on Minkara and you get the repair history the English-language internet can’t show you.
This also supports what the English guides recommend on the fix: the Japanese logs show these parts being replaced individually and repeatedly, which is exactly the pattern you’d expect if replacing one at a time doesn’t cure the wobble.

On the ISCV
The idle-control cluster deserves more weight than its raw count. Beyond the three sampled posts, Minkara’s featured/pinned content for the JB23W electrical category includes two entries explicitly marked with a star: ★ISCV清掃 (K6Aエンジン重要箇所) — “ISCV cleaning: critical area on the K6A engine” — and ★ECUリセッティング(※ISCV清掃後、必須) — “ECU reset: mandatory after ISCV cleaning.”
Featured posts are curated, not chronological, so we excluded them from the count of 141. But the community itself flagging ISCV as a critical K6A maintenance point, in a language no English guide reads, is exactly the kind of signal this exercise is meant to surface. No English JB23 guide we checked mentions the ISCV.
If you buy a JB23 with an unstable or hunting idle, this is where Japanese owners look first — and note the second half: they consider an ECU reset mandatory after cleaning it.
On air conditioning
Second-largest cluster, and completely absent from English guides. Five posts spanning the compressor circuit, radiator fan motor, control unit, and blower resistor — one titled 【危険度MAX!】エアコン故障→ラジエーターファンモーター交換 (“danger level max: AC failure → radiator fan motor replacement”), which is the giveaway that on this car the AC and engine-cooling circuits share a failure path.
Caveat, stated plainly: this sample was taken in late July, in Japan, during summer. Air conditioning work is seasonally over-represented, and so is battery charging. Treat the rank as unreliable and the existence of the cluster as the finding. A winter re-run would settle it, and we intend to do one.
Rust — corrected 2026-07-31
What this section originally said: our 18 exterior-category posts contained zero rust repairs, and we offered three hypotheses for why.
That was wrong, and here is why it was wrong. A direct term search found ten detailed JB23 frame-corrosion repair logs immediately. The rust documentation exists in volume. Our chronological sample missed it for a reason none of our three hypotheses named: frequency. An oil change happens 2–4× a year for every owner; frame rust repair happens once per car per decade. We’ve left the error visible rather than quietly editing it out. Here’s what the rust logs actually say.
Where JB23s rot, from owners’ own inspection summaries
- Front tow hook section of the frame
- Under the headlights — water collects there
- Trunk / rear floor — the best-known spot, and the warning attached to it is the important part: owners report cars reaching the market with these holes crudely patched, so a clean-looking rear floor needs probing, not glancing at
- Body mount points — six of them securing body to ladder frame. When these corrode the body can’t be properly secured and the car fails Japanese inspection (車検). Several logs show mounts torn through or welded back
- Main frame rails — inspect from the side. Owners repeatedly report frames that look sound and hole through when tapped
Note the inspection technique. These logs describe a hammer tap, not a visual check. More than one owner describes tapping a “slightly suspicious” spot and going straight through it. A visual inspection of a JB23 frame is not an inspection.
The regional finding
One owner’s summary states it plainly: a snow-region JB23 at 100,000 km will reliably have something rotted through, while a western-Japan car can be clean underneath at 200,000 km. Salt is named repeatedly as the cause — coastal air and winter de-icing both — with one log attributing a nearly-severed body mount to salt exposure rather than off-road use.
If you are choosing between two JB23s, the prefecture it lived in may tell you more than its mileage. Ask where the car spent its life. It’s a question the auction sheet won’t answer for you and the exporter probably won’t volunteer.

What this changes about buying a JB23
Derived from the data above, not from general advice:
Inspect hardest, in this order
- Front end — kingpins, tie rod ends, lateral rod and every bush. This is where the work actually happens. Budget to do the whole complex at once rather than chasing it part by part.
- Air conditioning and radiator fan operation, together. Test the AC even if you’re viewing in winter.
- Idle quality, warm and cold, with the AC both off and on. Hunting or dropping idle points at the ISCV.
- ABS warning light — confirm it extinguishes after start-up.
- Ignition coils and vacuum/intake hoses — cheap, common, and easy to negotiate on.

- Photos of the ladder frame from underneath, regardless of what this sample did or didn’t show
Search Minkara yourself. Every Japanese term in the table above is a working search string. Method and limits
Source. Minkara (みんカラ), operated by Carview — Japan’s largest car owner community. Maintenance logs are user-posted DIY and service records with photos. The platform reports 126,268 maintenance logs for the Jimny nameplate; our sample is drawn from the JB23W-filtered subset.

Classification. Each title assigned to routine/consumable, modification, fault-or-wear-driven, or procedural. Fault clusters grouped by system.
Known limitations — all of these are real and none are rhetorical:
- Titles only. We did not read post bodies. A title like “エンジンが、なんかへーん” (“engine’s gone a bit weird”) is uncategorisable at title level, and some routine-looking titles certainly conceal fault diagnosis.
- Seasonal bias. Late-July collection over-represents air conditioning and battery work. Stated again because it materially affects the #2 cluster.
- Newest-first, not random. A chronological slice, not a stratified sample of the model’s 20-year history.
- Posting bias. Maintenance logs record what owners chose to publish — skewed toward DIY-feasible jobs with photogenic steps. Shop work, warranty work, and unglamorous failures are under-represented. This is the most likely explanation for the rust result.
- No stratification. Not broken down by revision type (the JB23 ran through 10 official revisions), mileage, or year. A 1998 1-type and a 2018 10-type are counted alike, which for a 20-year production run is a genuine weakness.
- Serial posts counted individually. Two ABS posts and two starter/alternator posts are the same owner documenting one job across multiple entries, inflating those counts. Distinct-incident counts are lower than post counts where noted.
- N is small. 141 posts against a population of six figures. This is a pilot. Treat cluster existence as the finding and cluster rank as provisional.
What would make this better, in the order we intend to do it: a winter re-run to break the seasonal bias; stratification by revision type; reading bodies on the fault-classified posts to extract mileage at failure; and a targeted rust search across all categories rather than exterior alone.
