Mazda RX-7 FD3S 25 year rule 2026 eligible manufacture month: Oct 2001–Aug 2002 builds
For the query “Mazda RX-7 FD3S 25 year rule 2026 eligible manufacture month,” the answer is a build month, not a model year: a Mazda RX-7 FD3S built in October 2001 reaches 25 years in October 2026, and each later build month follows one month at a time through August 2027.
この記事の要点
- The US federal age exemption asks for a vehicle that is “25 or more years old,” and CBP’s declaration guide asks for the production month and year, so the count runs on the build month, not the listing year.
- As of October 23, 2026, an FD3S built in October 2001 reaches 25 years this month (October 2026). A November 2001 build reaches it in November 2026, and so on, up to August 2027 for an August 2002 build. (The sources we used confirm month-and-year input only, not how the day within the month is treated; for an October 2001 build entering in October 2026, confirm with your customs broker.)
- Mazda’s launch dates (Type R Bathurst R on August 30, 2001; Type R Bathurst on December 10, 2001; Spirit R on April 22, 2002) are not build months, and Mazda has not published build-month chassis ranges that we could verify.
- If the build month is later than October 2001, wait; if you cannot confirm it, hold the payment and ask the exporter for the build month and the original engine. The EPA rule is separate and counts calendar years.
An FD3S qualifies in the same month 25 years after its build month, so October 2001 builds qualify this month
The FD3S 25-year rule counts from the production month, so a car built in October 2001 meets the age requirement in October 2026.
The NHTSA import exemption in 49 CFR 591.5(i)(1) requires that “the vehicle is 25 or more years old.” When a car is declared as 25 years or older (Box 1 of the HS-7 declaration), CBP’s ACE implementation guide says the production date must show that it “is at least 25 years old,” and that the month and year are mandatory, in the format MMCCYY (month, century, year) (CBP, October 30, 2017 edition).
As of October 23, 2026, the build month that reaches 25 years this month is October 2001 (an editorial calculation: October 2001 plus 25 years). November 2001 is next, in November 2026. A dealer listing that says “2001 model” does not tell you which of these months applies, so a 2001 listing alone is not proof of eligibility today.
This article covers the US federal age test only. State registration rules are separate and are not covered here.
Each build month from October 2001 to August 2002 has its own eligibility month, from October 2026 to August 2027
Find your car’s build month in the table; the “months to wait” column counts from October 2026.
The eligibility months below are editorial calculations (build month plus 25 years, per the 25-year requirement and the month-and-year declaration above). The “months to wait” column is also an editorial calculation, counted from October 2026. Builds before October 2001 reached 25 years in earlier months, so they are already past the line. The table lists the eleven build months from October 2001 to August 2002, and it does not claim that an FD3S was built in every one of those months.
Status as of October 23, 2026
| Build month | Eligible from (NHTSA 25 years) | Status as of October 23, 2026 | Months to wait (editorial calculation) |

The sources we used confirm month-and-year input only, not how the day within the month is treated, so for an October 2001 build entering in October 2026, confirm with your customs broker.
The last row depends on Mazda’s stated production end. Mazda’s Spirit R announcement said FD3S production was expected “to come to an end in August 2002,” so August 2027 is the last eligibility month if that expectation held; confirm the actual build month of any late car rather than assuming it.
Use the entry (customs) month, not the bid month, as your test: the car must be 25 years old when it is entered. For the full year-by-year picture, see the 2027 eligibility calendar. For a same-format table of another car, see the R34 GT-R 25-year rule 2026 article.
Launch dates are not build months, and Mazda has not published build-month chassis ranges
Mazda’s press releases give Japanese launch dates, and a launch date tells you only that cars were on sale then, not when your car was built.
| Model | Japanese launch date | Unit limit stated by Mazda | Launch date plus 25 years (editorial calculation, reference only) |
|---|---|---|---|
| RX-7 Type RZ (with the model-wide improvements) | October 18, 2000 | 175 units | not used here |
| RX-7 Type R Bathurst R | August 30, 2001 | 500 units (Japan only) | August 30, 2026 |
| RX-7 Type R Bathurst | December 10, 2001 | no unit cap stated in the release | December 10, 2026 |
| RX-7 Spirit R (all three types combined) | April 22, 2002 (announced March 25, 2002) | 1,500 units (Japan only) | not used here |

Do not buy on the launch date. The “launch date plus 25 years” figures are a sales-date reference, not a build date. A car can be built before it goes on sale, and the age test uses the production month. Decide on the build month from the plate or documents.
Mazda’s releases give launch dates and unit limits, but we found no Mazda-published build-month chassis ranges. Fan labels such as “Series 7” or “Series 8” have no primary source in our research, so they are not an official eligibility boundary. For the Spirit R, see FD3S Spirit R 25-year rule 2027; this article does not repeat its build-month details.
Ask your exporter for the build month and original engine before you pay, because customs needs month and year
Ask for the build month, in writing, before you pay, because the US declaration uses the production month and year and your car’s eligibility date follows from it.
Two separate rules apply, and they count differently.
| NHTSA (safety) | EPA (emissions) | |
|---|---|---|
| Age requirement | 25 or more years old | At least 21 years old (Form 3520-1, code E, original configuration) |
| How age is counted | Production month and year are mandatory on the declaration | Calendar year of manufacture subtracted from the year of import; months are not used |
| Engine condition | None stated in the sources used here | A replacement engine is not eligible unless it is the same as the original or an equal-or-better certified engine |
| FD3S result | October 2001 builds in Oct 2026; later months as in the table above | 2001 builds reach 21 years in 2022; 2002 builds in 2023 (editorial calculation) |
For FD3S builds from 2001 and 2002, the EPA 21-year point has already passed, so the NHTSA 25-year month is the one that sets your timing. The engine condition still matters: an engine swap can make a car ineligible for the EPA exemption.
Send the exporter something like this:
- “Please send a photo of the build plate and the export documents showing the manufacture month and year (month, not just year).”
- “Is the engine the original one for this chassis? If it was replaced, what is the replacement?”
- “Please confirm the planned entry month so we can check it against the 25-year month.”
How to prove a build date (plate, documents, invoice, recall records) is covered in 25 year rule manufacture month, in narrow a JDM car’s build date, and in Japanese vehicle export documents.
If your car’s build month is later than October 2001, wait; if you cannot confirm it, hold
Choose by build month and planned entry month: go, wait, or hold.
As of October 23, 2026, the three cases are:
- Go: the build month is October 2001 or earlier, confirmed in writing, and the entry month will be October 2026 or later. The age test is met on a month basis; if the entry is in October 2026 itself and the build is October 2001, confirm the day-level treatment with your customs broker first (see the last section) (the original-engine check from the section above still applies).
- Wait: the build month is November 2001 or later. Look up the eligibility month in the table (November 2026 to August 2027) and plan the entry for that month or after, not the bid date.
- Hold: the build month is unknown or unproven. Do not pay on a model-year listing alone.
| Avoid | Do this instead |
|---|---|
| Importing a car that is under 25 years and fixing it later | Under 25 years, a car must comply with all applicable US safety standards (CBP), so wait for the 25-year month |
| Treating a 2001 listing year as “eligible” | Read the build month on the plate or documents |
| Using the launch date plus 25 years as your date | Use the production month |
Where this article stops: tariff totals, proof methods, Spirit R months, and state registration are covered elsewhere
This article answers one question, when a given FD3S build month reaches 25 years, and leaves four things to other pages.
- How the date is applied day by day: our sources confirm month-and-year input on the CBP declaration, but not how a day within the month is treated. We could not retrieve NHTSA’s own FAQ for this check, so treat the first days of an eligibility month with caution and confirm with your customs broker.
- Proof of the build month: see 25 year rule manufacture month.
- Cost: exporter fees are in Japanese car exporter hidden fees. Tariff totals and other cost figures are not covered here.
- Condition before you bid: see FD3S RX-7 common problems.
- Spirit R build months and type counts: see FD3S Spirit R 25-year rule 2027.
よくある質問
Q1. Is an FD3S built in November 2001 legal to import in October 2026?
No. As of October 23, 2026, a November 2001 build reaches 25 years in November 2026 (an editorial calculation), so it has to wait until then. An October 2001 build reaches it this month.
Q2. Does the model year or registration year decide eligibility?
No. The CBP declaration for a 25-year-or-older vehicle requires the production month and year (format MMCCYY), so the build month is what counts. A model-year or registration-year listing is not a substitute. How to prove the build month is covered in 25 year rule manufacture month.
Q3. When can the last FD3S, built in August 2002, be imported?
In August 2027, if the car was built in August 2002 (an editorial calculation). Mazda said in its March 25, 2002 announcement that production was expected to end in August 2002, so August 2027 is the final eligibility month on that basis. The year-by-year list is in the 2027 eligibility calendar.
Q4. Is “Series 8” an official eligibility boundary?
We could not confirm that. We found no primary source from Mazda or from US authorities that defines “Series 7” or “Series 8,” and the eligibility test in the sources we used is the individual production month and year. Check the build month, not the series name.
Q5. Does EPA’s 21-year rule change the 25-year timing?
No. The EPA test is separate: it requires a vehicle at least 21 years old in its original configuration and counts calendar years. For a 2001 build the EPA point was 2022, and for a 2002 build it was 2023 (editorial calculation), so both have passed and the NHTSA 25-year month sets your timing. An engine that is not original, or an equal-or-better certified replacement, can still make the car ineligible for the EPA exemption. State rules are outside this article.
