Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VII (CT9A) — What Japanese Owners Actually Report

English coverage of the Evo VII is better than for most chassis in this series. It correctly identifies the ACD and AYC hydraulics as the headline concern, warns about timing belts and the boost actuator, and tells you to avoid a heavily-tuned car with no records. Good advice.

Our data confirms the ACD warning and then extends it in a direction the guides don’t cover: it isn’t only the pump. Japanese owners are replacing the ACD computer as well as the ACD pump.

It also surfaces three clusters English guides miss entirely — one of them a documented fuel pump seizure.

Method in one paragraph

We sampled the CT9A/Evo VII-filtered maintenance logs (整備手帳) on Minkara across five categories — running gear, exterior, engine bay, electrical, inspection — newest first. N = 153 posts, collected 2026-07-31. Titles only. Minkara maintains separate model pages per Evo generation, so this is Evo VII specifically rather than the whole CT9A platform — a cleaner filter than we managed on some other chassis. 1. ACD — the guides are right, and it’s wider than they say

Two posts, filed in two different categories:

The Evo VII introduced the Active Center Differential, and English guides consistently flag the pump. They do not flag the control unit. On a car now 25 years old, a hydraulic pump and a dedicated ECU are two separate failure paths with two separate costs, and only one of them is on the standard inspection list.

What to do: ask for the ACD to be exercised through all three modes (Tarmac / Gravel / Snow) with confirmation that the mode actually changes and no warning light appears, and ask for stored fault codes to be read. A pump that works but a computer that throws codes is a different negotiation from either alone.

On AYC: English guides warn that AYC hard lines rust through — significant for a car from a salted-road prefecture. We found no AYC posts in our sample, which given our known under-detection of rust work we read as absence of evidence rather than evidence of absence. Note also that a genuine JDM Evo VII carries both ACD and AYC, where US-market Evos (which began at the VIII) omitted AYC. Both systems need their fluid regimes. Ask for service records for each.


2. Fuel pump — four posts, one of them a seizure

Nothing in the English guides covers this. Note the second entry: the owner replaced the pump and the relay driving it — worth knowing before you replace a pump and find the fault persists.

A seizing fuel pump on a turbocharged car is a fuel-starvation risk under load, which on a boosted engine is not a roadside inconvenience. Ask about fuel pump history, and treat hot-restart hesitation as a symptom worth investigating rather than a quirk.


3. ISCV — the fourth chassis, and the clearest signal yet

Four posts, the strongest of any car in this series:

That last one carries a warning worth extracting: a replacement ISCV failed after 200 kilometres and was sent back. If you are budgeting a replacement on a car of this era, factor in that the aftermarket supply for these valves is not uniformly good, and prefer OEM or a reputable reman where you can get it.

The cross-chassis pattern is now firm. Idle-control valve work appears on the JB23 (ISCV, flagged by the community as a critical K6A item), the S15 (AAC valve, logged as scheduled preventive work), the JZX100 (ISCV air filter), and now the Evo VII, most heavily of all.

Four chassis. Four manufacturers. Three different names for the same component. Zero mentions across every English buyer’s guide we have checked. We now treat this as a general characteristic of Japanese cars of this era rather than a per-model quirk. A rough, hunting or dropping idle should send you here first.


4. Electrics: relays, switches, and ETACS

The Evo VII’s electrical profile sits between the JZX100’s ECU-level failures and the DC5’s trivial bulb changes — and it has a character of its own.

ETACS — 3 posts. Mitsubishi’s Electronic Time and Alarm Control System, the body control module: one new-unit replacement plus two configuration changes. A body control module failing on a 25-year-old car is an expensive, model-specific problem, and it is absent from English coverage.

Relays and switches — roughly 6 posts. Fuse-box relay replacement three times (each noted as GT-A), air conditioning relay twice, a starter relay possibly shared with ABS, ignition switch twice (once with its relay), and backup lamp switch twice.

Relays and switches are cheap individually. A cluster this size on one chassis suggests the underlying issue is age-related contact degradation across the harness rather than any single failed part — the kind of thing that presents as intermittent, hard-to-diagnose electrical gremlins.

Also present: rebuilt starter motor, air mix motor replacement logged explicitly as air conditioning failure, fan controller and condenser fan replacement, washer pump, fog lamp failure, keyless entry trouble.

Practical check: operate everything. Air conditioning through its full range, every lamp, keyless entry, the ignition switch itself. And request a photograph of the instrument cluster at ignition-on before start, to see the warning-light state.


5. What the sample says about modification and paperwork

Two posts in the inspection category are AT→MT載せかえ公認車検 ①② — an automatic-to-manual conversion taken through 公認車検, Japan’s official certification process for structural modification.

This is the 構造変更 / 改 process documented step by step by an owner. It matters to you for two reasons:

Also relevant to parts: one owner fitted Evo IX factory dampers, and another repaired a mirror by combining two broken ones (ニコイチ). The CT9A platform ran from the VII through the IX, so much interchanges — but model-specific trim is being cannibalised, which tells you what supply looks like.

And the modification population is real but moderate — LSD fitment, coilovers, a wing, aero. Considerably less extreme than the JZX100. The English advice to prefer a documented, lightly-modified car with the original ECU is supported by what we see.


6. Buying checklist

  1. ACD through all three modes — confirm the mode changes, no warning light, and read stored codes. Ask about the ACD computer, not just the pump
  2. AYC — confirm present (a genuine JDM VII has it), ask for fluid service history, inspect hard lines for corrosion
  3. Fuel pump history. Hot-restart hesitation is a symptom, not a quirk
  4. Idle quality warm and cold — the ISCV
