Honda Integra Type R DC5 — What Japanese Owners Actually Report
149 maintenance logs posted by Japanese DC5 owners, classified and counted.
The DC5 became US-import eligible in 2026, and the buying guides written for that moment focus on rust in the rear quarters, perished engine mounts, and the K20’s timing chain tensioner.
Our data confirms one of those, doesn’t find another, and turns up something none of them mention that matters more than all of it:
Japanese DC5 owners are converting Type S cars into Type R cars, and the logs document it step by step. If you are about to pay Type R money for a car you have only seen in photographs, §1 is the section to read.

Method in one paragraph
We sampled the DC5-filtered maintenance logs (整備手帳) on Minkara across five categories — running gear, exterior, engine bay, electrical, inspection — newest first. N = 149 posts, collected 2026-07-31. Titles only. The filter (mg=3.3105) is DC5-generation, which means Type R and Type S cars are mixed together — a limitation that turns out to be the point. Full limits at the end.
1. The Type S → Type R problem
Five posts in our sample are grade conversion work:

Brakes, gearbox, spoiler, intake, exhaust. That is most of the visual and tactile difference between the two grades, and Japanese owners are documenting each step publicly because it’s a normal, enthusiast thing to do.
Nobody in these logs is committing fraud. They’re improving their own cars. But those cars enter the used market, and eventually the export market, and a Type S with Type R brakes, a 6-speed, a Type R spoiler and a Type R intake is very difficult to identify from photographs.
The stakes are real: the JDM Type R made 220 ps from the K20A against the Type S’s lower-output engine, and the price gap follows.
How to actually verify the grade
Do not rely on the badge, the brakes, the gearbox, the spoiler, or the seller’s description. All of them are transplantable, and the logs prove it.
Verify on the paperwork instead. The Japanese inspection certificate carries two fields — 型式指定番号 (type designation number, 5 digits) and 類別区分番号 (classification number, 3–4 digits) — which together identify the exact factory specification, distinguishing variants more finely than the catalogue grade. They are assigned when the car is built and they do not change when someone bolts on Type R parts.

Also check the engine model field (原動機の型式) — K20A versus the Type S engine — and ask whether the certificate carries the 改 modification marking, which a registered gearbox conversion would require.
One further check: the same document set records the engine code, so an engine swap shows up there too. A Type S shell with a transplanted K20A and unregistered paperwork is a different problem again — and one that will complicate a US EPA declaration, which requires the original engine.

Front suspension is the largest cluster
Seven posts, and the pattern within them is instructive: left front lower arm and right front lower arm as separate jobs, front stabiliser links and rear stabiliser links as separate jobs, plus tie rod end boots, a hub bearing, and a power steering pump and hose.
Both-sides-eventually is how this wears. If you’re inspecting one, budget for the pair, not the one that’s currently knocking.
Headlights — polished nine times
Four posts, and one of them is titled ヘッドライト磨き9回目 — “headlight polishing, 9th time.” Another owner logged the 8th. Plus a full headlight unit replacement, a clean-and-protect treatment, and an HID burner change.
Polishing restores clarity but removes the factory UV coating, so it comes back faster each time. A DC5 whose lenses look crisp in listing photos may have been polished the week of the auction. Ask when, and ask whether they’ve been replaced.
What we did not find
Timing chain tensioner failure: zero posts. English guides warn about it and tell you to listen for rattling at cold start. We found no instance in 149 logs. That is not evidence it doesn’t happen — the guides tie it to neglected oil changes, and this population changes oil obsessively (roughly 15 oil-change posts in 45 engine entries). Keep listening at cold start; just note that Japanese owners aren’t logging it.
Interior degradation: not sampled on this chassis.
3. Rust — filed under the part, not under “exterior”
Zero rust posts in 18 exterior entries. Same as the JB23 and S15.
But this time rust showed up elsewhere in the sample:

This is the cleanest evidence we’ve collected for something our method page treats as a known blind spot: owners file a rust job under the component being treated, not under a “rust” or “exterior” heading. Category browsing will systematically miss it. Term search is the only reliable way in.
So treat our zero-rust exterior result as a measurement artifact, not a finding about the car. English guidance flags the rear quarters and the subframes on this chassis specifically, and nothing here contradicts that. Inspect them.
4. Electrical: quiet, and that’s worth saying
Nine battery replacements — the most of any chassis in this series — plus fuses and a long list of bulb changes and LED conversions. The faults are trivial: bulbs, fuses, a drink-holder lamp.
There is no equivalent here of the JZX100’s electronic failure cluster — no ECU repairs, no throttle-control faults, no instrument failures. Two cars of nearly the same age; completely different electrical ageing profiles. If you’re choosing between them, that difference is worth more than a horsepower figure.

5. What this changes about buying a DC5
Verify first, inspect second
- 型式指定番号 and 類別区分番号 — confirm the car left the factory as a Type R. Everything else on this list is secondary
- 原動機の型式 — K20A? And does the certificate carry 改?
- Front lower arms, stabiliser links, tie rod end boots, hub bearings — both sides
- Headlights: replaced, or polished? How many times?
- Cooling — both electric fans, thermostat, radiator
- Rear quarters and subframes for rust, regardless of what our exterior sample showed
- Cold-start rattle, for the tensioner the guides warn about and we didn’t find
Ask your agent for
- The two grade-identifying numbers, read off the certificate — not the seller’s description of the grade
- Close photographs of the rear quarter arches and subframes
- Headlight photographs taken in daylight, at an angle

Sample. 149 post titles, 16 listing pages, 5 categories, collected 2026-07-31, newest-first.

Limits:
- Type R and Type S are mixed. The filter is generation-level. Given §1, arguably no DC5 dataset cleanly separates them.
- One prolific owner dominates. A large share of posts share a “愛車インテグラDC5” title prefix — one owner logging routine work in series. This inflates routine counts and means our sample is less independent than N=149 suggests. The most significant limitation on this chassis.
- Rust undercounted by construction — see §3.
- Titles only. Bodies unread.
- Frequency ≠ incidence. Newest-first counts posting events, not failure rates.
- Seasonal. July collection.
- Interior not sampled.
- N is small against 8,457 Integra logs across all generations. Cluster existence is the finding; rank is provisional. Nothing here is a reliability statistic.
